With the entry of the US into the war in 1917 the British sent a mission headed by the Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Washington . Asked what the Americans could do to help, Balfour replied: “ Our soldiers are in great need of doctors. We have exhausted our supply. Our people at home have released more than they can spare. Our wounded are suffering. I charged my mind that my first request of your government would be – Send us Doctors. Can you do this?” Asked how many, Balfour replied: “Could you send us a thousand?” He was answered: “Two thousand”

Albert enlisted on September 9th 1917, and was discharged on July 10th 1919.
